Oscar Smith’s Johnson and Scott Secure State Football Honors

Oscar Smith High School celebrated a remarkable achievement in Virginia high school football as senior wide receiver Travis Johnson was named the Virginia High School League (VHSL) state Class 6 Offensive Player of the Year. In addition, Chris Scott, the head coach of the Tigers, earned the title of Coach of the Year after leading the team to its second consecutive championship and the fourth in his coaching tenure.

Johnson, who has committed to Michigan, delivered an outstanding performance this season, recording 56 receptions for a total of 1,157 yards and scoring 15 touchdowns. This marks his second consecutive year being recognized as an all-state player, underscoring his impact on the field.

In recognition of their stellar performances, Johnson was joined on the first team by seven other Oscar Smith players, including junior quarterback Lonnie Andrews, senior offensive lineman Dory Wilson, sophomore defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, senior linebacker Malachi White, senior defensive back Jayden Covil, senior punt returner Quali Price, and senior all-purpose player Na’Rod Jarvis. Additionally, the second team featured senior tight end Charles McGlown and Jarvis, who also earned recognition as a linebacker.

Oscar Smith’s success was evident during their victory over Indian River, where they triumphed with a score of 33-20 at home in Chesapeake, Virginia, on September 20, 2025.

Old Dominion Faces Player Transfers

In college football news, Old Dominion University is experiencing changes in its roster as starting tight end Jailen Butler plans to enter the transfer portal, according to a representative who spoke with Pete Nakos of On3 Sports. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing 245 pounds, Butler has a total of 21 starts under his belt, with 18 career receptions for 103 yards and one touchdown.

Moreover, the Monarchs are set to bolster their lineup with the addition of running back Hunter Patterson, who is transferring from Division II West Liberty University. Patterson showcased impressive statistics, amassing 1,219 rushing yards and scoring 17 touchdowns on 174 carries, alongside catching 33 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns during his previous season on a team that finished with a 3-8 record.

Christopher Newport Players Recognized for Academic Success

In women’s collegiate soccer, two players from Christopher Newport University have earned the prestigious designation of Scholar All-Region. Senior midfielder Hanna Heaton, hailing from Gloucester, and junior goalkeeper Amy Sidaway were selected among ten players to receive Scholar All-South Region honors. Heaton’s recognition marks her as a repeat first-team selection, highlighting her excellence both on the field and in academics.

The achievements of Heaton and Sidaway extend a program-record streak to eight consecutive years, with at least one player being acknowledged for outstanding performance in both athletics and academics. To qualify for the Scholar All-Region selections, players must compete as juniors or above, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40, and play in a minimum of 75% of their games.
