Darren Sidaway, a 48-year-old resident of Cleveland, is one of many individuals seeking self-directed health insights. Faced with personal health concerns, including weight issues and fears of metabolic disorders linked to conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Sidaway opted to take matters into his own hands. Unsatisfied with the routine blood work results he received, he spent approximately $200 to order a variety of tests through Goodlabs, a company that allows consumers to purchase lab tests without needing a doctor’s prescription.
These tests assessed various biomarkers that his physician had not monitored, such as uric acid levels, which some studies suggest may correlate with insulin resistance and inflammation of the immune system. The findings revealed elevated markers in Sidaway’s results, prompting him to actively seek ways to improve his health. “This is the stuff that if I went to my doctor [with], my doctor would kind of look at me like I’m weird,” Sidaway remarked, highlighting the disconnect between patient-driven testing and traditional medical practice.
The trend of patients ordering lab tests online is becoming increasingly common, as individuals desire immediate answers about their health. Customers typically navigate online platforms to select and pay for tests, often without consulting a healthcare professional beforehand. Samples for these tests are collected by phlebotomists, processed at partner laboratories like Quest Diagnostics, or, in some cases, gathered and mailed by the customers themselves.
This shift raises challenges for healthcare providers. Many doctors find themselves unprepared for discussions regarding tests that may not meet established medical guidelines. Sidaway’s experience illustrates this struggle. After conducting a cortisol test due to his concerns about stress-related fluid retention, he encountered a specialist who expressed skepticism about the test’s relevance to his condition. Despite this, Sidaway was unwilling to wait for extensive clinical studies to validate the benefits of certain tests, stating, “Doctors are going to have to get used to this and navigate this.”
