Penguins Suffer 6-2 Loss to Checkers, Third Straight Defeat

UPDATE: The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins faced a crushing defeat against the Charlotte Checkers, losing 6-2 on December 12, 2023, at Mohegan Arena. This marks the Penguins’ third consecutive loss to the Checkers, dropping their record to 22-9-1-2 in Atlantic Division play.

The Checkers exploded out of the gate, establishing a commanding 4-0 lead early in the second period. The Penguins struggled to find their footing as Charlotte dominated the ice. Charlotte is now four points clear of Lehigh Valley for the third spot in the division, while WBS maintains a narrow four-point lead over Providence.

Despite the defeat, the Penguins managed to show some resilience. Aaron Huglen found the net, scoring his second goal of the season with just seven minutes left in the second period, narrowing the gap to 4-1. However, the Checkers quickly responded, with Robert Mastrosimone netting a power-play goal that reestablished the four-goal advantage before the period ended.

The third period saw the Penguins push back, with Joona Koppanen scoring just two minutes in, bringing the score to 4-2. However, it was not enough to change the momentum as the Checkers sealed their victory with two additional goals.

In goal, Sergei Musashov allowed five goals over two periods before being replaced by Filip Larsson, who stopped 14 of 15 shots in the final period.
