Phil Olivier, Beloved Teacher and Musician, Passes Away at 87

BREAKING: Phil Olivier, a cherished educator and musician, passed away peacefully at the age of 87 early this morning, December 1, 2025, in Santa Cruz, California, following a long illness. His loss is felt deeply by family, friends, and the community he impacted throughout his life.

Born on August 16, 1937, in San Francisco, Phil’s journey began in Berkeley, where he attended UC Berkeley and graduated in sociology and education. He started his teaching career at Kensington School, where he met his wife, Kaye Olivier. The couple moved to Santa Cruz in 1968, where Phil dedicated nearly three decades teaching at Bradley School in Corralitos.

Phil was more than just a teacher; he was a devoted husband and father who cherished family adventures. He and Kaye took their sons, Scot and Jordan, on summer camping trips across the western United States, creating lifelong memories in the great outdoors. Their love for nature flourished during two-week excursions in the Sierra, particularly around Tuolomne Meadows, where Phil found rejuvenation in the mountains and the beauty of the high country.

An accomplished musician, Phil’s bass baritone voice resonated in many choirs, including a remarkable 30 years with the Cabrillo Chorus. He filled his home with music, entertaining friends and neighbors alike. Phil was also a passionate photographer, writer, and hiker, with a zest for life that inspired those around him.

Phil’s extensive travels took him across Europe, Africa, and the Hawaiian Islands, leaving a legacy of adventure and exploration. His humor and laughter were infectious, creating joyful gatherings with family and friends for birthdays and holidays.

Phil is survived by his wife Kaye, sons Scot and Jordan, daughters-in-law Jong and Jill, daughter Robin, and eight grandchildren: Andrew, Kelsey, Ryan, Sean, Rachel, Noah, and Matteo. He was preceded in death by his son Christopher and older brother Barry.

The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Adam Yarme, Hospice of Santa Cruz County, and caregiver Cameron for their compassionate care during this difficult time.

A memorial service will be held at St John’s Episcopal Church in Aptos on January 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Phil’s name to Hospice of Santa Cruz County, the Alzheimer’s Association, or the SPCA of Santa Cruz County.

Phil Olivier’s legacy of love, laughter, and learning will continue to inspire all who knew him.
