UPDATE: In a thrilling display of athleticism, the Potosi boys wrestling team secured victory at the Central Invitational on October 14, 2023, dominating a field of 17 teams with a total of 201 points. Meanwhile, the Ste. Genevieve girls team triumphed, amassing 270.5 points to clinch the tournament title in Park Hills.
Potosi’s junior star, Carter Pyatt, achieved an impressive 18-0 technical fall in the 165-pound finals after pinning his earlier opponents in the first period. He marked his third consecutive title at this event, showcasing his dominance on the mat. Fellow teammates Karsen Boyer (175) and Gavin Stone (126) also captured first-place finishes, contributing to Potosi’s stunning performance.
The victory was not without intense competition. Potosi held off challenges from Affton, Gateway Science, and Pattonville, all of whom fought hard to close the gap. North County placed fifth, with Central finishing sixth, each securing two bracket champions.
In a standout match, Boyer managed to escape a near fall against Central’s Lane Warden, maximizing his lone takedown to secure his title. Warden initially took the lead with a spinning takedown, but Boyer’s resilience proved decisive.
In the girls’ division, the Ste. Genevieve Dragons made headlines by placing seven wrestlers atop their weight classes. Freshman Lillee Petty from Central took the 110-pound title, while Ste. Genevieve’s Aila Wolk (115), Ragan Picou (135), and Anna Fischer (170) each posted flawless 4-0 records with four falls.
The tournament showcased the remarkable talent of local wrestlers, including North County’s Aiden Nash and Jamal Robinson, who each pinned all of their opponents to capture titles in the 138 and 150-pound categories, respectively. Nash allowed only three points throughout the tournament, demonstrating his dominance.
With the dust settled on this year’s Central Invitational, all eyes now turn to upcoming matches as teams prepare for further competitions. Potosi is looking to build on their momentum, while Ste. Genevieve aims to maintain their undefeated streak in dual contests.
