Rian Johnson Reveals New Sci-Fi Film with 1970s Thrills
UPDATE: Rian Johnson, acclaimed director of the Knives Out series, has just confirmed exciting details about his upcoming film, revealing a unique blend of genres. This new project will incorporate light sci-fi elements while drawing inspiration from 1970s paranoid thrillers.
Johnson shared his vision in an interview with Empire, stating, “If I had to define it genre-wise, I’d say it harkens back to the ’70s paranoid thrillers. It’s got a light sci-fi element to it.” Fans of the director can expect a fresh take, as he emphasizes that it won’t be the typical sci-fi fare seen in franchises like Star Wars.
While Johnson remains a beloved figure in the Star Wars universe, he clarified, “That cog will be turning the rest of my life. I love Star Wars, and if someday it makes sense to come back to it, it would be the most wonderful thing in the world.” However, for now, his focus is firmly set on this new project.
In addition to his work on Knives Out, Johnson previously directed the critically acclaimed time travel thriller, Looper, and has produced the hit Peacock series, Poker Face. He has shared that Poker Face, too, has sci-fi elements, describing its lead character, Charlie Cale (played by Natasha Lyonne), as possessing a “superpower” that allows her to detect lies.
“I think ultimately, that’s all you can do, is just kind of follow your nose,” Johnson expressed about his creative process for this new film. The excitement is palpable as industry insiders and fans alike await more news about this intriguing project.
The director’s latest film, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, is set to hit select theaters on November 26, followed by its Netflix debut on December 12. As anticipation builds, audiences can look forward to how Johnson will blend his signature storytelling with the unique elements of a sci-fi thriller.
Stay tuned for further updates as Johnson’s new vision unfolds. This is a project that promises to push the boundaries of storytelling while delivering the thrilling twists and emotional depth that fans have come to expect.
