UPDATE: A Rocky Mount man has been charged with attempted murder after his girlfriend was shot multiple times in a home near Whitakers, North Carolina, on October 21, 2023. The shocking incident unfolded at a residence on Speights Chapel Road, prompting an urgent response from local authorities.
According to the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received initial reports of a gunman involved in a domestic dispute. As they were responding, a second call alerted them to a female victim suffering from serious injuries. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the woman with multiple gunshot wounds and immediately provided aid until Edgecombe County EMS transported her to ECU Health Medical Center.
The suspect, identified as Hayward Mann, age 49, fled the scene before law enforcement arrived. However, through swift investigative efforts, deputies located Mann shortly after and took him into custody without further incident. He was found in possession of a firearm, which was subsequently recovered by officers.
Mann has been charged with felony attempted first-degree murder. He is currently being held without bond at the Edgecombe County Detention Center. The court has scheduled his appearance for Wednesday morning at the Edgecombe County Courthouse in Tarboro.
