Samuel Bennett Johnson, II Passes Away at 82; Remembered Fondly

UPDATE: Samuel Bennett Johnson, II, aged 82, has passed away in Capitola, CA, due to complications from Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. His family has confirmed this heartbreaking news, marking the end of a life filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories.

Johnson, a devoted husband to his wife Mary Ann for 58 years, leaves behind three children, seven grandchildren, and a vast network of friends who will deeply miss his vibrant spirit. Known for his unwavering positivity, Sam often responded to inquiries about his well-being with a cheerful, “Never better!”

Born in 1942 on Coronado Island, San Diego, Sam’s love for the ocean was evident from an early age. He was a self-proclaimed “beach bum,” spending countless hours spearfishing, body surfing, and sailing at La Jolla Shores and Windansea Beach. In 1960, he relocated to Wisconsin, where he pursued an engineering degree at UW Madison. It was there he met Mary Ann, paving the way for their long-lasting partnership.

The couple married in 1967 and raised their family in Wauwatosa, WI. In 1981, seeking new opportunities, Sam moved to Pleasanton, CA, where he worked at Sandia National Laboratories until his retirement at age 62.

In retirement, Sam returned to his beach roots in Capitola, where he and Mary Ann created lasting memories with their grandchildren. They embraced an active lifestyle, enjoying beach walks, golfing, and traveling together. An enthusiastic member of the Santa Cruz Rowing Club, Sam shared his passion for rowing and became a mentor, teaching others about rigging and repairing boats.

Sam’s legacy will endure through his wife Mary Ann, children Christine Abusaidi, Mike Johnson, and Julie Longmire, and his beloved grandchildren: AliKhan, Arman, Amir, Nathan, Thomas, Luke, and Cooper. Acknowledging the support from Santa Cruz Hospice, the family expresses gratitude for the compassionate care provided during this challenging time.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends to honor Sam’s memory with a donation to Hospice. His spirit will undoubtedly live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
