URGENT UPDATE: The San Pedro boys basketball team achieved a thrilling comeback victory over Palos Verdes, winning 69-61 in overtime during the opening game of the Wiseburn Da Vinci Tournament on December 4, 2023.
Trailing by 12 points in the third quarter, the Pirates rallied to force the game into overtime, showcasing their resilience in what marked their season opener. San Pedro’s Ricky Alonso emphasized the importance of teamwork, stating, “We had to come together offensively, knowing our strengths and we played harder on defense.”
The Pirates demonstrated their tenacity by outscoring the Sea Kings 20-10 in the fourth quarter. The momentum shifted as the game approached its climax. In overtime, Palos Verdes initially seized a 58-57 lead thanks to Luke Dalis’ free throws, but San Pedro responded with a decisive 6-0 run, regaining control at 63-58.
Despite a late three-pointer from Palos Verdes’ Max Cui, cutting the lead to 63-61, Alonso sealed the game by sinking six consecutive free throws, including two awarded after an intentional foul. He finished with an impressive 21 points, with 15 points scored in the critical fourth quarter and overtime periods. Chris Morgan and Elias Redlew contributed significantly, adding 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Cui led Palos Verdes with a remarkable 28 points, but it was not enough to secure victory. Alonso reflected on their struggle during the early phases, saying, “Guys were putting their heads down. Things then started going our way; we started making shots and making a run.”
