Saugatuck Celebrates Fat Tuesday with Thrilling Pub Crawl

UPDATE: Saugatuck is buzzing with excitement today as revelers celebrate Fat Tuesday and the start of the Year of the Fire Horse in a vibrant Mardi Gras-style pub crawl. Just moments ago, the Great Lakes Brass Band kicked off the festivities, leading a lively crowd down Butler Street, making stops at five local taverns.

Participants are trading the usual stroll for a fun-filled crawl between popular venues including Wally’s Bar & Grill and Phil’s Bar & Grille. The event, held on February 17, has attracted a diverse mix of costumed participants enjoying the dry, near 50°F weather. As the Great Lakes Brass Band played upbeat dance tunes, the atmosphere became electric, drawing in more and more partygoers eager to join the fun.

This year’s pub crawl is not just about revelry; it serves a significant purpose. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Red Horse Collaborative Leadership Center, a nonprofit that provides therapeutic mental health support, art, and leadership development for kids in Allegan County. Participants proudly displayed brightly-colored equine placards, emphasizing the connection to this important cause.

At the first stop, attendees received punch cards and festive party gear like beads and feathered boas. The excitement was palpable as they gathered outside Wally’s, ready to dive into the festive spirit. As the band led the way, players marched in an energetic procession, with the crowd following closely behind, swaying and dancing as they made their way down Hoffman Street, heading towards the next stop.

The revelers continued their journey to multiple locations: from Phil’s Bar & Grille to The Sand Bar Saloon, The Butler, and finally culminating at The Southerner, where a delicious Cajun buffet awaited. The night will conclude with a final performance from the band, keeping spirits high as the festivities roll on.

With many participants opting for Interurban buses to ensure a safe trip home, the community is not only enjoying a day of fun but also prioritizing safety. The event promises to be a memorable celebration, blending culture, fun, and support for local youth.
