UPDATE: Scotts Valley High’s football team stunned Monte Vista Christian (MVC) with a decisive 45-21 victory at Harbor High on Saturday night, marking MVC’s first loss of the season in the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission North Division. This shocking defeat creates a four-way tie for second place in the league, intensifying the playoff race with just three games remaining in the regular season.
Scotts Valley’s offense hit its stride, scoring a season-high point total while their defense effectively stifled MVC’s high-powered passing attack, especially in the first half. “The last couple of weeks our offense has been a little stagnant,” said Falcons coach Louie Walters. “We promised that we’d turn it around, and I think we did.”
With this win, the Falcons (5-2, 1-1) now share the second-place standings with MVC (4-3, 1-1), St. Francis (3-4, 1-1), and Watsonville (3-4, 1-1). The top two teams will secure automatic berths into the Central Coast Section playoffs, making every game crucial.
In a standout performance, running back Vaughn Chomentowski exploded for 155 yards and two touchdowns on just 18 carries. “It was hard to watch what happened last game happen and not be able to do anything, but that’s why I had that fire in me tonight,” Chomentowski commented after the game.
Quarterback Caden Kilpatrick was instrumental, completing 8 of 14 passes for 155 yards and contributing two touchdowns. The Falcons amassed 309 rushing yards, overpowering MVC’s defense and keeping them off balance throughout the game.
Despite MVC’s inability to establish a running game, managing only 38 yards on the ground, quarterback Evan Vessey kept the Mustangs in the game, throwing for 245 yards and three second-half touchdowns. However, early turnovers proved costly as MVC lost two fumbles, stalling their offensive momentum.
“Scotts Valley played really well,” said MVC coach Spencer Ferrari-Wood. “It was clear from the beginning their plan was to take away Boston (Ashe). They had a good plan to kind of take him out of it.”
The game’s momentum shifted dramatically early when MVC fumbled on a promising drive, only to see Scotts Valley capitalize with a quick 91-yard scoring drive, taking a 7-0 lead. A 48-yard touchdown run from Chomentowski further extended their advantage, putting the Falcons up 17-0 at halftime.
As the second half unfolded, both teams exchanged touchdowns, but Scotts Valley maintained control with a punishing ground game that drained the clock. The Falcons’ final score came via a 21-yard touchdown pass to Seamus Drees, sealing the game and their resurgence after a disappointing loss to San Lorenzo Valley just a week earlier.
MVC will look to rebound on Thursday, hosting SLV at 7:30 PM, while Scotts Valley heads to Watsonville for a 7 PM showdown on Saturday. With the playoff picture tightening, every game matters, and both teams will be eager to secure their spots in the postseason.
This significant victory for Scotts Valley not only boosts team morale but also reignites their playoff hopes, proving that they are back in the hunt. As the stakes rise, fans and players alike are eager to see how the remainder of the season unfolds.
