UPDATE: Today marks the final day in office for Selma Mayor James Perkins Jr., wrapping up a transformative tenure that has spanned over a decade. As the clock strikes midnight, Perkins reflects on his journey, characterized not by political ambition but by a profound sense of duty. “I never had a desire to be mayor. This was always an assignment. And now, I feel released and relieved,” he stated earlier today.
Perkins leaves behind a legacy of significant accomplishments, including the creation of 2,000 new jobs and the successful recruitment of Hyundai to Alabama. His administration has also modernized city services and launched an award-winning community outreach model. “We created new industries and saw Selma’s population grow for the first time since the 1960s,” Perkins noted proudly.
His return to office in 2021 was met with challenges as the city battled crises such as Hurricane Zeta, COVID-19, and an Arctic Freeze that threatened Selma’s water system. Five years later, Perkins emphasizes rebuilding essential infrastructure: securing $152 million for the city, resurfacing 80 blocks, and upgrading drainage and sewer systems.
Despite these achievements, Perkins faced criticism from residents eager for visible development rather than underground repairs. “People want restaurants and stores, but you can’t build on collapsing infrastructure,” he explained. As he contemplates Selma’s future, Perkins urges the next administration to continue building upon the foundational work laid during his tenure. “I hear the noise. But this is foundational work. Now someone else can build on it,” he expressed with hope.
With gratitude, Perkins concludes his service, stating, “I’m probably not a great politician, but I’m a good public servant. Thank you for the privilege of serving.” Even as he steps away from city hall, Perkins plans to continue his community engagement from the pulpit, remaining dedicated to the city he has called home his entire life.
Looking ahead, Perkins hopes the incoming administration will maintain the momentum in infrastructure development while strengthening ties between the mayor’s office and city council. As Selma prepares for a new chapter, the community reflects on the significant impact of Perkins’ leadership and the road ahead.
