Senator Urges Urgent Relocation of Office of Technology Amid Flood Risks

UPDATE: Senator Telo Taitague is calling for the immediate relocation of the Office of Technology (OTECH) to the former chancery property in Agana Heights, highlighting urgent safety concerns. In a letter addressed to Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero and Lt. Gov. Joshua Tenorio, Taitague raised alarms over the office’s current flood zone location and potential asbestos hazards that threaten the integrity of essential government data.

The senator’s plea comes as the office’s current facility, which houses critical servers for GovGuam, is located on Aspinall Avenue in Hagåtña. Taitague emphasized that flooding could disrupt access to vital data infrastructure serving all government agencies, posing a significant risk to public services. “Should we lose access to these servers and the data housed within them, the impact on the Government of Guam and its people would be devastating,” she stated.

In her letter, Taitague pointed out that the former chancery property, purchased in November 2024 for $2.3 million, was acquired as part of a bankruptcy settlement with the Archdiocese of Agana. However, only two months ago, the government announced plans to transform the property into a drug and alcohol abuse treatment center.

“Providing OTECH with a safe and secure headquarters is imperative,” Taitague urged. “This location would facilitate the maintenance, development, and expansion of their operations, ensuring the safety of government employees.”

As of now, Adelup—the governor’s office—has not responded to Taitague’s request. The senator’s appeal underscores the critical need for government agencies to operate within secure environments, particularly as reliance on technology surges in public administration.

Residents are encouraged to follow this developing situation closely as the implications of server disruptions could have far-reaching effects on government efficiency and public safety.
