Solano County Celebrates 25 Years of Literacy Support at Luncheon

UPDATE: The 25th Annual Solano County Authors Luncheon took place on October 15, 2023, uniting authors, readers, and community leaders in a vibrant celebration of literacy. Hosted by the Solano Library Foundation, this milestone event emphasized the critical role of literacy programs across the county, raising funds to support initiatives that benefit residents of all ages.

Guests enjoyed sparkling mimosas and a catered lunch while participating in both silent and live auctions, showcasing a variety of books and unique experiences. Foundation Board President Ravi Shakar kicked off the event, highlighting its significance in promoting literacy. “Our work and success depends on your generosity and support,” Shakar stated, emphasizing community involvement in literacy efforts.

The luncheon featured a powerful keynote address from Mychal Threets, a former Solano County librarian and the host of the rebooted Reading Rainbow series. Threets, whose latest picture book, I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, was showcased during the event, shared his personal journey from despair to hope. “I was dying two years ago,” Threets revealed, reflecting on his struggles with depression. His heartfelt message resonated deeply, earning him a standing ovation from the audience.

Threets urged continued support for libraries, calling them “lifelines” that help individuals of all ages find hope and belonging. His emotional testimony underscored the importance of literacy programs, especially in challenging times.

In addition, the event highlighted the contributions of healthcare professionals to literacy awareness. Dr. Jeff Gaborko, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente, spoke about the vital connection between early reading and long-term health outcomes. “Literacy is key to success,” Gaborko stated, encouraging parents to share books with their children early and often.

The authors’ showcase included notable figures such as:
Dr. Genea S. Brice, Vallejo’s first Poet Laureate
Dr. June Gillam, an award-winning crime fiction writer
Dr. Gary Matsumura, a retired obstetrician whose memoir offers insights into his medical career.

The event concluded with Shakar reiterating the urgent need for community support for literacy programs, emphasizing their transformative impact on lives throughout Solano County.

As the event wrapped up, guests left inspired and motivated to continue championing literacy, ensuring future generations have access to the resources they need to thrive.
