UPDATE: A long-awaited stop sign has finally been installed at a hazardous intersection in Irving Park, following years of complaints and multiple accidents. The new four-way stop at the intersection of Belmont and Karlov Avenues was put in place last Thursday, bringing relief to local business owners and residents who have long feared for their safety.
Arlene Luna, owner of Moonwalker Cafe, expressed her gratitude for the installation, stating that it addresses a critical safety need in the community. For years, Luna and her partner, Jack Blue, have witnessed numerous accidents outside their cafe, with some incidents occurring just days apart. Last March, a pedestrian and a cyclist were struck by vehicles at this very intersection, highlighting the urgent need for traffic control measures.
The dangers of this intersection are exacerbated by speeding drivers trying to beat traffic signals on Pulaski Road. Luna noted that just in April, a vehicle crashed into a nearby storefront, narrowly missing pedestrians waiting for the bus. “If it’s safer, even if it’s gonna cost people a half a second more, I think it’s worth it,” Blue stated, reflecting the sentiments of many concerned locals.
The intersection is situated at the convergence of several neighborhoods and is divided between the 30th Ward, represented by Ald. Ruth Cruz, and the 31st Ward, represented by Ald. Felix Cardona. Local officials have been aware of the traffic issues, as the area has become a cut-through for drivers avoiding congestion.
In a traffic study completed in 2023, residents had requested the installation of a stop sign. However, the Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) initially deemed it ineffective due to the significant difference in traffic volume between Belmont and Karlov. Earlier this year, a second traffic study was conducted, which ultimately led to the installation of the stop sign after continued community pressure.
As of now, traffic conditions at the intersection have remained problematic, even with the installation of a speed camera in June. The community is hopeful that the new stop sign will drastically improve safety and reduce the likelihood of future accidents.
This installation marks a significant victory for local advocates who have fought tirelessly for safer streets. The emotional toll of witnessing accidents has pushed many residents and business owners to take action, and they are now seeing results.
Local officials and residents are eagerly watching for the impact of the stop sign. With traffic patterns expected to change, the community hopes this new measure will lead to a safer environment for everyone.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the community adjusts to the recent changes at this critical intersection.
