UPDATE: The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is actively investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred during a standoff involving the Carter County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday, October 14, 2023.
Around 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to a vandalism report at a residence on Jarrett Buck Loop Road in Johnson City. Upon arrival, they encountered a man armed with a gun who subsequently barricaded himself inside the home.
Authorities report that deputies attempted to negotiate the man’s surrender using chemical agents and non-lethal methods, but he refused to comply. When they tried to enter the room where he was holed up, the man opened fire, targeting both the deputies and a law enforcement drone, which was ultimately destroyed.
In an effort to resolve the situation, deputies utilized a fire department water hose to persuade the man to surrender. However, for reasons that remain under investigation, deputies discharged their weapons, striking the man. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Fortunately, no law enforcement officers were injured during this tense incident. The TBI is now gathering evidence and conducting interviews to piece together the timeline of events that led to the shooting. Findings from this investigation will be submitted to the district attorney general for further review.
As this story develops, updates will be provided to keep the public informed. The TBI emphasizes its commitment to transparency and thoroughness in its investigation.
