UPDATE: Two individuals tragically lost their lives in a devastating head-on collision on U.S. Highway 71 in Stearns County on Friday evening. The Minnesota State Patrol confirmed the identities of the victims as Linda Shirleen Erickson, 63, from Sauk Centre, and Paul Joseph Matthys, 55, from Osakis.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:13 PM near the intersection with 265th Street in Lake George Township. Both drivers were the sole occupants of their vehicles at the time of the collision. Erickson was driving a 2015 Kia Sportage southbound while Matthys was traveling northbound in a Dodge Durango.
Authorities reported that the two vehicles collided head-on, resulting in fatal injuries for both drivers. Fortunately, road conditions were dry at the time of the crash, and both drivers were reported to be wearing their seat belts. Airbags deployed in the vehicles, but the impact was too severe.
While alcohol was confirmed not to be a factor for Erickson, it remains unclear if it played a role in Matthys’ driving. This incident marks a tragic event for the local communities of Belgrade and Elrosa, leaving family and friends mourning the loss.
