URGENT UPDATE: Four-year-old Khaleesi Marie Cortez is currently on life support at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, as she battles for her life against a rare heart condition known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This critical situation follows years of intensive treatment, including five major heart surgeries.
Khaleesi was diagnosed with her condition while her mother, Salina Morales, was still pregnant. The condition severely underdevelops the left side of the heart, leaving Khaleesi’s heart missing that vital section. Additionally, she has an atrial septal defect, a hole between the upper chambers of her heart.
“She’s been so strong. She’s a remarkable little girl — she’s shown me what strength really looks like,” Morales stated, highlighting her daughter’s resilient spirit despite the overwhelming challenges. After enduring years of hospital stays and numerous medical procedures, Khaleesi’s body is now exhausted, and her chances of recovery stand at a daunting 10 percent.
“If we’re not able to get her heart function to recover, then we end up finding ourselves pretty much on a life support system that we’ll eventually need to turn off,” Morales explained in a heartbreaking account of their current reality.
As her family clings to hope, they have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist with daily expenses while they remain by Khaleesi’s side in Houston. Their greatest wish is for Khaleesi to celebrate her fifth birthday on December 1, 2023. “That’s what we’re praying for,” Morales shared. “We’ve just been praying and I think everyone’s prayers have been heard.”
