UPDATE: An alarming assault inside Macy’s Herald Square has left a family shaken just days before the holiday shopping season. On November 22, 2023, Mustafa Sevindik, a 71-year-old cancer survivor, was attacked while shopping with his family on the ninth floor of the iconic New York City department store.
Authorities report that a woman, Donna Francis, 65, approached Sevindik from behind and struck him four times in the head with what is believed to be a cell phone. The incident, which occurred in broad daylight, sent shockwaves through the family and sparked immediate concern for their safety.
Emre Sevindik, Mustafa’s son, described the frightening moment, stating, “It was very scary to see my dad get hit. First reaction was to make sure he was OK.” Mustafa was quickly taken to a local hospital where he was treated for deep internal bruising.
Police announced that Donna Francis was arrested the following day and charged with assault. In a statement regarding the incident, Macy’s emphasized that “the safety of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority.” The company added that it takes all incidents seriously but could not provide further details.
The attack has deeply affected the Sevindik family, with Mustafa expressing gratitude that the situation wasn’t worse: “Thank God no knife, no gun. I say thank God.” However, the emotional toll of the attack is evident. “Now, I’m scared. For what? For my family, for everyone,” he said. His wife, Hulya Sevindik, shared her anxiety, stating, “I’m nervous. Now, I don’t want to go out.”
As the holiday season approaches, the family is attempting to maintain their festive spirit, yet they find themselves reassessing their safety in the city they love. Emre remarked, “I can be as hopeful as I can. I don’t know if I’m optimistic.”
The Midtown South Precinct, where the assault took place, has reported a slight uptick in felony assaults over the past year, with misdemeanor assaults in the area increasing by more than 8%. This rising trend in crime is causing concern among residents and visitors alike, especially with the influx of holiday shoppers expected in the coming weeks.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as the investigation continues. The Sevindik family is now left grappling with the aftermath of this unsettling encounter, emphasizing the urgent need for safety during what should be a joyous time of year.
