UPDATE: Over 120 workers are urgently responding to an oil spill in Kipnuk, Alaska, caused by the devastation of former Typhoon Halong. As communities prepare for the return of evacuated residents, the U.S. Coast Guard is leading cleanup efforts amid worsening winter conditions.
The storm surge flooding overturned containers, releasing oil and gas into the surrounding environment. Cleanup crews are racing against time as winter weather sets in, making their task even more critical. “We have a team of four deployed in Kipnuk to recover spilled oil and mitigate potential future spills,” stated Buddy Custard, CEO of the Alaska Chadux Network.
Custard reported that the majority of the spilled material was home heating oil and gasoline for vehicles and ATVs. “This light oil dissipates quickly, and much of it was flushed out with the tides due to extensive flooding,” he explained. The cleanup team is now working with local responders to establish collection sites for any recovered oil.
However, challenges are mounting. Shannon McCarthy from the Department of Transportation stressed that daylight is dwindling, with crews losing 5 to 7 minutes of working light each day. “We are facing colder temperatures along with ice and snow, which complicates our ability to transport workers to communities,” McCarthy noted.
As cleanup efforts continue, Governor Mike Dunleavy and Small Business Administration officials are promoting disaster loans to assist residents affected by the typhoon. They met with evacuees at the Alaska Airlines Center to discuss available support, highlighting the urgent need for resources to rebuild.
