Urgent Forum Draws Hundreds Against Proposed ICE Detention Center
UPDATE: A community forum in Marana, Arizona, drew hundreds of concerned residents on October 12, 2023, as fears mount over the potential conversion of a former prison into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. The event, moderated by Pima County Supervisor Jennifer Allen, highlighted overwhelming opposition to the proposal, with attendees expressing strong emotions against what they see as a threat to community values.
The facility, previously owned by Management and Training Corporation (MTC), was purchased back from the state for $15 million earlier this year. MTC has indicated plans for the site, stating it may be used for detention purposes, but specifics remain unclear as they continue to explore opportunities with public agencies.
At the forum, veterans and residents voiced their outrage. Veteran Stevie Rendino stated, “I fought for freedom or so they told me, and now here I am having to protest a secret police.” Fellow attendee Bennett Burke echoed her sentiment, expressing “absolute disgust” at the situation.
Despite the strong local opposition, support for the ICE facility exists among some officials. Republican State Senator John Kavanagh has publicly backed the idea, arguing it would alleviate overcrowding in local jails. Earlier this year, Kavanagh proposed Senate Bill 1294, which sought to lease the facility to ICE for just $1 a year, but the bill ultimately failed to pass in the House.
The community forum featured a panel of experts, including immigration attorney Mo Goldman and representatives from the ACLU of Arizona, who discussed the potential impacts of an ICE detention center on local families. Panelists took questions from the audience, emphasizing the need for community solidarity against the proposal.
As discussions continue, community members are strategizing on how to effectively voice their opposition. The meeting underscored the urgency of the situation, as the future of the Marana facility remains uncertain.
Officials and residents alike are now watching closely for any developments regarding the facility’s operational plans. With tensions high and community engagement robust, the fate of this potential ICE detention center could significantly impact the Marana area.
