Urgent Hearings Set in Scranton for Major Water Rate Hikes

UPDATE: The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has just announced a series of urgent hearings regarding significant proposed water rate hikes by Pennsylvania American Water Co. (PAWC). These critical in-person hearings will take place in Scranton on January 15, 2024, at 1 PM and 6 PM at the University of Scranton’s Brennan Hall, located at 320 Madison Ave.

This announcement is crucial for the local community, as these are the only hearings scheduled in Northeast Pennsylvania. PUC Administrative Law Judges Jeffrey A. Watson and Emily DeVoe will preside over the hearings, which are expected to attract significant public attention.

The PUC voted on December 4 to suspend and investigate PAWC’s proposal, which seeks an overall rate increase of $168.7 million, translating to approximately 14.6% in total annual operating revenues for water and wastewater services. This increase will affect around 682,000 water customers and 97,000 wastewater customers across 37 counties in the state.

Residents are encouraged to attend these hearings to voice their opinions and concerns regarding the proposed rate hikes. Notably, preregistration is not required, making it accessible for all interested parties to participate.

Additionally, the PUC has scheduled telephonic hearings for January 21, providing another opportunity for public involvement. For details on how to participate in these telephonic sessions, visit puc.pa.gov.

A final decision from the PUC on the proposed rate increase is expected by August 13, 2024. As this situation develops, local residents are urged to stay informed and take action, as the outcome could significantly impact their monthly water bills and overall community resources.

This is a developing story, and we will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for the latest on this important issue affecting Scranton and surrounding areas.
