Urgent: Snow, Sleet, and Ice to Hit Philly Region Friday

UPDATE: A significant winter storm is set to impact the Philadelphia region on Friday, bringing a dangerous mix of snow, sleet, and ice starting from 1 p.m. Friday and lasting until 10 a.m. Saturday. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for portions of Southeast Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and northern Delaware.

Snow is expected to develop between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., with areas transitioning from snow to sleet as temperatures fluctuate. The city of Philadelphia could see up to 1 inch of snow, while surrounding areas and the Lehigh Valley may accumulate between 1-3 inches. Officials warn that road conditions will be particularly hazardous during the evening commute.

In New Jersey, Winter Storm Warnings will be in effect for western Monmouth, Middlesex, and Somerset counties, where forecasts predict 3-5 inches of snow. The NWS advises residents to prepare for slippery roads and limited visibility.

Additionally, authorities in Philadelphia have declared a Code Blue due to the harsh weather conditions, which is effective through 11 a.m. Saturday. During a Code Blue, special measures are enacted to ensure the safety of those experiencing homelessness. The city will provide 24-hour outreach to locate unhoused individuals and transport them to safe indoor spaces, as well as open all available beds in the emergency housing network.

Residents are encouraged to assist by contacting the city’s Homeless Outreach hotline at 215-232-1984 if they see someone in need.

This developing weather situation poses immediate risks to commuters and vulnerable populations. Stay tuned for updates as the storm progresses and take necessary precautions to stay safe.
