UPDATE: A tragic four-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near Loveland, Colorado, has resulted in the heartbreaking death of 17-month-old Elijah Manley. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office confirmed his identity Thursday morning following the incident that occurred on Tuesday.
The crash, which left another juvenile and two adults injured, unfolded near Crossroads Boulevard and was linked to a previous vehicle involved in a medical emergency. According to the Colorado State Patrol, responding emergency services were on the scene when the secondary crash occurred.
At approximately 4:00 PM, a box truck driven by Jose Salazar, 35, veered from the center lane and collided with a Lexus GX in the right lane. This impact forced the Lexus into other vehicles, leading to the unfortunate death of Elijah, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities report that two adults and one child from the Lexus were transported to the hospital for treatment, while Elijah’s injuries proved fatal. Salazar now faces serious charges including child abuse resulting in death, vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, and vehicular assault, among others. His court appearance is scheduled for 8:30 AM on December 29, 2023, at the 8th Judicial District Court in Fort Collins.
A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support Elijah’s family during this devastating time. The fundraiser aims to alleviate financial pressures from lost wages and unexpected expenses as the family grieves their unimaginable loss. The campaign description poignantly notes, “No words can fully capture the heartbreak of losing a child in a tragic car accident.”
This incident underscores the urgent need for road safety and awareness, especially concerning vulnerable passengers like children. As details continue to develop, community members are urged to offer support and compassion to the grieving family.
