Urgent Winter Storm Warning: Heavy Snow and Travel Hazards Ahead

URGENT UPDATE: A powerful winter storm is set to disrupt travel across Western Colorado starting tonight. Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories are now in effect as heavy snowfall and strong winds threaten dangerous conditions, impacting major routes and local communities.

The Winter Storm Warning is active from 11 PM Monday until 5 AM Thursday for regions including Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre Plateau, and the San Juan Mountains. Travelers should prepare for snowfall totals of 10 to 18 inches, with wind gusts reaching up to 60-70 mph. These conditions can lead to whiteout situations, making travel difficult to impossible.

Areas like Vail Pass, Crested Butte, and Telluride are expected to see the most significant snowfall. As a result, travel disruptions are anticipated on highways leading to the Front Range and also toward Salt Lake City. Authorities warn that conditions could be dangerous, emphasizing the need for caution.

In addition to the Winter Storm Warning, a Wind Advisory will be in effect from 5 AM Tuesday until 5 PM Tuesday for parts of Southwest and Northwest Colorado, including the Yampa River Basin and Dolores River Valley. Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible, heightening the risk of falling trees and power outages.

As rain transitions to snow overnight, expect a quick burst of precipitation between midnight and 6 AM Tuesday. Another round will follow on Tuesday morning, bringing intermittent snow throughout the day. By Wednesday, snowfall could reach up to 1-2 feet in higher elevations, particularly in the San Juans and Elk Mountains, where some areas may even top 3 feet.

Travelers should stay informed and consider delaying non-essential travel during this time. The National Weather Service advises that conditions will likely worsen, with more snow anticipated through Thursday and Friday.

This winter storm is a reminder of the urgency of safety during hazardous weather conditions. Officials urge residents and travelers to stay tuned to local weather updates and prepare for significant disruptions.
