Whitman County Historical and Genealogical Societies Open New Space

URGENT UPDATE: The Whitman County Genealogical Society and Whitman County Historical Society have officially opened a new shared space in Pullman, providing vital resources for community members interested in local history. The public is invited to explore this new facility during an open house on Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 525 NE Campus Ave., Room 102.

This relocation comes in the wake of the sudden closure of the Gladish Community and Cultural Center in September, which displaced several local organizations. Both societies had just two weeks to pack and find a new home, marking a significant transition after more than three decades at Gladish.

During the open house, visitors can access a wealth of library and archival resources aimed at preserving the rich history of Whitman County. Monica Peters, correspondence secretary for the genealogical society, emphasized the importance of their work, stating that the organization fills in the gaps of family histories through unique written records and accounts that are not available online.

Meanwhile, Alex Otero, archivist at the historical society, noted that their mission encompasses a broader scope, focusing on the “where” and “what” of the county’s heritage. Their collections include over a century-old publications of the Pullman Herald, plot records, maps, and old photographs.

The new facility will be open to the public every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon, or by appointment. The historical society currently offers free research assistance, while the genealogical society charges $20 per hour for in-depth family history investigations.

Both organizations play a crucial role in maintaining local heritage and fostering community connections. Peters highlighted the growing public interest in genealogy, stating that people are eager to learn more about their ancestry beyond just names. This work not only helps individuals connect with their family roots but also strengthens community ties.

As the communities of Pullman and Whitman County adapt to this new chapter, the societies urge residents to visit and utilize their resources. The emotional connection to local history and family stories is vital, and these organizations are dedicated to ensuring that these stories continue to be told and preserved.
