Cobbs Creek Unveils High-Tech Facilities to Revive Historic Golf Course

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Cobbs Creek Golf Course has reopened with an impressive transformation, featuring a high-tech driving range, a full-service restaurant, and a community-focused event space. This redevelopment marks a significant milestone in the long-anticipated revival of the historic course, which has been a staple in the city for over a century.

The Cobbs Creek Foundation officially launched the new facilities this week, including a two-story driving range and golf entertainment center located at 7403 Lansdowne Ave. The center, named the Lincoln Financial Center at Cobbs Creek, serves as the anchor for the course’s reopening, which aims to turn Cobbs Creek into a year-round destination for golf and community engagement.

New Facilities Enhance Community Engagement

Reservations are now available for the state-of-the-art Toptracer-equipped practice bays, with walk-ins also welcome. Cobbs Creek Foundation President Jeff Shanahan expressed excitement about the opening, stating that bringing golfers and residents back to this historic site has been a core mission of the foundation.

The project is a result of a partnership with Lincoln Financial, which became a founding sponsor of the nonprofit foundation in March 2024. John Kennedy, Lincoln Financial’s Chief Distribution and Brand Officer, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in supporting community education, mentorship, and networking programs planned for the Cobbs Creek Golf and Education Campus.

The new facility includes 68 Toptracer practice bays, with 20 heated bays available for reservations to ensure year-round play. Golfers can also enjoy food and beverages delivered directly to their practice bays, combining leisure with dining.

Dining and Event Options Expand Offerings

Dining options at Cobbs Creek have also been elevated with the introduction of The Little Horse Tavern, a collaboration among the Cobbs Creek Foundation, Fitler Club, and Strother Enterprises. The restaurant serves a menu of golf course favorites such as burgers, wood-fired pizzas, and cocktails, operating daily from noon to 8 p.m. Reservations are encouraged, but walk-ins are also welcomed.

Additionally, a new event space named 1916 by Fitler Club, which can accommodate over 200 guests, has opened for meetings, private events, and community gatherings. This space is named in honor of the year Cobbs Creek Golf Course first opened.

The course also features a new nine-hole layout, the Q School Short Course, designed by TGR Design, the golf course architecture firm led by Tiger Woods. This short course aims to introduce new players to the game while providing experienced golfers a venue to refine their skills.

General manager Chris Parker invites the community to engage with the new facilities, saying, “This winter, we’re inviting Philly to come out to Cobbs Creek — hit some balls, try our new short course, bring friends, share a meal, and experience what we’re building here.”

The comprehensive revitalization of Cobbs Creek Golf Course is part of a larger effort to restore and enhance the historic grounds, with the Cobbs Creek Foundation aiming to raise $180 million for ongoing improvements. The restoration of the 18-hole championship course, led by architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner, is currently underway, with an anticipated opening in 2027.

The campus is managed by Troon, a global golf and hospitality services firm. This redevelopment not only seeks to enhance the golfing experience but also aims to create a vibrant community hub that fosters connections among residents.
