Falcons Retain Defensive Coordinator Ulbrich Under New Coach Stefanski

In a significant move following a coaching change, the Atlanta Falcons have retained defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich on new head coach Kevin Stefanski‘s staff. The announcement was made on Monday, just two days after Stefanski was appointed as the successor to Raheem Morris, who was dismissed after the team concluded the season with an 8-9 record.

Ulbrich’s continuation with the team comes with the endorsement of Falcons owner Arthur Blank. Following the firings of Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot, Blank stated he would recommend but not mandate the new coach to retain the defensive coordinator. This decision reflects confidence in Ulbrich’s ability to enhance the team’s defensive capabilities.

Defensive Improvements Under Ulbrich

During Ulbrich’s first season as defensive coordinator, the Falcons achieved a remarkable turnaround on defense. The team set a franchise record with 57 sacks, a significant improvement from the previous year when they ranked second-to-last in the league with only 31 sacks. Key contributors to this success included rookie first-round picks James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, along with second-year player Brandon Dorlus.

Pearce, in particular, stood out with 10.5 sacks, marking the highest total for a Falcons player since Vic Beasley recorded 15.5 sacks in 2016. The team’s draft class also featured safety Xavier Watts, who made a notable impact with five interceptions. Additionally, safety Jessie Bates III earned a spot as one of four Falcons players named to the All-Pro team in 2025.

Future Direction and Coaching Changes

Stefanski’s decision to retain Ulbrich is the first major staff change announced following his hiring on March 15, 2024. This comes less than two weeks after he was let go by the Cleveland Browns. During his six seasons with the Browns, Stefanski was recognized twice as the AP Coach of the Year and compiled a record of 45-56. His dismissal came on January 5, 2024, after the Browns finished their season with a disappointing 5-12 record.

Looking ahead, Stefanski is expected to appoint a new offensive coordinator and special teams coach. The search for these positions is being led by newly appointed president of football operations, Matt Ryan, the former long-time quarterback for the Falcons. Ryan is also in the process of seeking a new general manager to help shape the team’s future.

The Falcons’ management appears focused on building a robust coaching staff and enhancing their competitive edge as they move forward into the next season.
