A devastating fire at a popular nightclub in Goa, India, resulted in the deaths of at least 25 people, including several tourists, according to local officials. The incident took place just after midnight on March 4, 2024, in Arpora, a well-known party destination in North Goa. The state’s Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, confirmed that many of the deceased were kitchen workers from the club, along with three to four visitors.
The fire was reportedly triggered by a gas cylinder explosion, which has since been extinguished. Six individuals sustained injuries but are currently in stable condition, as per reports from the Press Trust of India. Eyewitness accounts indicate that approximately 100 people were on the dance floor when flames erupted, leading to panic as many attempted to flee to the kitchen area below and became trapped with staff.

The nightclub, situated along the backwaters of the Arpora River, has been criticized for its narrow entry and exit points. This design flaw forced emergency services to park their fire trucks around 400 meters away, significantly delaying firefighting efforts. Local village council member Roshan Redkar revealed that authorities had previously issued a demolition notice for the club due to its lack of a construction permit; however, this order was later rescinded by higher officials.
In response to the tragedy, the state government has initiated an inquiry to ascertain the precise cause of the fire and to evaluate whether fire safety regulations and building codes were adhered to. The inquiry aims to prevent similar incidents in the future and to enhance safety measures within the nightlife industry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences via social media, describing the event as “deeply saddening.” He mentioned that he had spoken with Chief Minister Sawant regarding the situation and assured that the state government is providing all necessary assistance to those impacted by the tragedy.
