Three boats were destroyed and a fourth sustained damage due to a fire at the Fourwinds boat docks on Lake Monroe on the morning of March 15, 2024. The incident prompted a response from the Monroe Fire Protection District, which received reports of a vessel ablaze around 08:00 local time.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames engulfing several boats. Crews immediately began battling the fire while simultaneously pushing the burning vessels out of their slips to prevent further spread of the flames. Despite their efforts, three boats were completely destroyed, and one boat suffered what officials described as “moderate fire damage.”
Investigation and Second Incident
After the fire was extinguished, investigators determined that a mechanical malfunction was the cause of the blaze. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported in connection with this incident. Later that day, a second fire occurred when one of the previously damaged boats experienced a fuel spill that reignited, prompting another emergency response.
The Monroe Fire Protection District emphasized the importance of safety measures for boat owners, especially regarding mechanical checks and fuel handling. As investigations continue, officials have not disclosed the specific details of the mechanical failure that initiated the fire.
This incident serves as a reminder of the potential hazards associated with boating and the importance of maintaining equipment in safe working order.
