Fire Displaces Resident in East Grand Forks on New Year’s Eve

A fire broke out on December 31, 2023, at a residence located at 920 Second Ave. NE in East Grand Forks, displacing the lone occupant who was not home at the time. The East Grand Forks Fire Department responded promptly, managing to bring the blaze under control with assistance from the East Grand Forks Police Department and Altru Ambulance services.

Despite the intensity of the fire, which originated in the basement near the furnace, no injuries were reported. According to a statement from the East Grand Forks Fire Department, the cause of the fire remains unintentional and undetermined.

Significant Damage and Rescue Efforts

The fire inflicted extensive damage, leading to the classification of the residence as a total loss. Firefighters worked diligently for several hours, extinguishing hot spots and ensuring the area was safe. A total of 21 fire personnel were deployed to the scene along with three fire apparatus to combat the flames.

In a positive outcome amid the destruction, three dogs were successfully rescued and returned to their owner. Assistant Chief Paul Hansen commented on the unfortunate timing of the incident, stating, “It was more of a coincidence. Some people just aren’t home during the holiday, and it just so happened to be an unfortunate situation.”

The displaced resident is currently staying with family members as recovery efforts commence. The community has expressed support, highlighting the importance of safety and preparedness during the holiday season.
