A new program in Grand Forks is set to tackle employment barriers, potentially benefiting both individuals and the wider community. The Ready4Work Program, launched by the local nonprofit organization Love In Action in December 2023, aims to assist those facing challenges in securing and maintaining employment.
Preston Dahl, owner of Dahl House Properties, is the first local business owner to participate. He joined the initiative due to his personal connections with Doris Lebby, president of the Love In Action board, and his own commitment to helping others. “In some ways, it’s a ministry,” Dahl remarked, emphasizing the importance of believing in individuals seeking a second chance.
Dahl pointed out the ongoing skilled labor shortage in the area, noting the difficulties he encounters when hiring subcontractors for housing renovations. He believes that many individuals simply need an opportunity to prove themselves, while others may require additional support in developing essential soft skills. “Some people feel defined by their past,” he explained, suggesting that these individuals may assume they have no chance at employment and therefore do not pursue available opportunities.
The Ready4Work Program is designed to address these issues head-on. Everett C. Jones Sr., executive director of Love In Action, highlighted the organization’s goal of filling gaps in the community that hinder employment. He noted that many prospective workers struggle with practical issues such as unreliable transportation, lack of a mailing address, or essential documents like a birth certificate and Social Security card.
Jones stated, “People want to work, but sometimes need an extra push or additional guidance.” The program provides staff supervisors to help participants stay focused and ensure they arrive at work, addressing basic logistical challenges that can impede job seekers.
In addition to supporting individuals, the Ready4Work Program also aims to alleviate concerns for employers. By covering certain costs, such as insurance, the initiative reduces the perceived risks associated with hiring individuals who may have faced barriers to employment. “Employers only have to cover wages,” Jones noted, making it a more appealing proposition for local businesses.
Importantly, Jones emphasized that the program is not exclusively for the homeless community. “It’s for anybody who finds themselves in a shortfall and wants to get back to work,” he said. The program welcomes applications from individuals in various circumstances, inviting those interested to reach out for assistance.
Local business owners searching for seasonal, short-term, or ongoing labor solutions are encouraged to connect with Jones via email at [email protected] or by calling (701) 330-8775. The organization also welcomes support to help fund critical aspects of the program, including coordination, insurance, compliance, and sustainability.
“We are grateful for the donors that we have and excited for anyone who wants to be part of this specific transition,” Jones remarked. As the Ready4Work Program gains momentum, its potential to transform lives and strengthen the Grand Forks community is becoming increasingly evident.
