Yemen’s Houthi rebels have indicated they have ceased attacks against Israel and shipping in the Red Sea, coinciding with a fragile ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In a letter addressed to Hamas’ Qassam Brigades, published on October 30, the Houthis conveyed their message that military operations have been paused.
The letter stated, “We are closely monitoring developments and declare that if the enemy resumes its aggression against Gaza, we will return to our military operations deep inside the Zionist entity, and we will reinstate the ban on Israeli navigation in the Red and Arabian Seas.” Despite this communication, the Houthis have not formally confirmed that their campaign against shipping in the region has ended.
Since the ceasefire began on October 10, 2023, the Houthi rebels have not claimed responsibility for any attacks. Their military engagement in the region garnered international attention during the recent Israel-Hamas conflict, with the group launching strikes aimed at compelling Israel to halt its military actions.
