Hyundai Launches Locally-Assembled Staria MPV in Malaysia

Hyundai Motor has officially launched the locally-assembled Staria multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) in Malaysia, following the start of production at a facility in Kulim, Kedah, earlier this month. The production plant is operated by Inokom Corporation, which is predominantly owned by local vehicle assembler and distributor Sime Darby Motors. Hyundai retains a 15% stake in Inokom. Earlier this year, Hyundai established a new subsidiary named Hyundai Motor Malaysia (HMY) to manage operations at the Kulim plant and oversee its investment in the region.

Eric Lee, president of HMY, expressed the significance of this local production initiative. He stated, “The commencement of local production of the Hyundai Staria is more than just a production achievement. It represents Hyundai’s confidence in Malaysia as an important market and a growing hub for future assembly.”

This sentiment was echoed by Sui Keng Huat, managing director of Inokom, who highlighted the company’s journey to becoming a trusted assembly partner within Hyundai’s global network. Huat emphasized that each vehicle produced at the Kulim facility is crafted with precision and adherence to Hyundai’s global standards, showcasing the skills of 100% Malaysian talent.

Sime Darby confirmed its commitment to enhancing supply chains and supporting the nation’s industrial ecosystem, further solidifying the collaborative effort between the companies involved.
