Lithuanian filmmaker Romas Zabarauskas has released a new crime drama titled The Activist (Lithuanian: Aktyvistas), which delves into complex themes surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and societal challenges. The film premiered in Lithuanian cinemas on September 19, 2023, where it quickly secured the second position at the local box office. It is set to make its international debut at the 29th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 14, 2023.
This noir thriller is the third installment in Zabarauskas’ queer trilogy, following The Lawyer (2020) and The Writer (2023). The story revolves around the murder of Deividas, portrayed by Elvinas Juodkazis, a prominent human rights activist in Kaunas. The narrative unfolds just as the city prepares for its inaugural LGBTQ+ march. Tensions rise when Deividas’ secret lover, Andrius (played by Robertas Petraitis), grapples with his fear of coming out and his desire to support the community.
As the plot thickens, Andrius, consumed by grief and guilt, embarks on a covert investigation into Deividas’ murder. He soon uncovers a web of deceit surrounding his late partner, revealing that Deividas was surrounded by enemies posing as friends. The film’s cast features notable actors including Vaslov Goom as Bernardas, who strives to keep the activist group Rainbow strong; Redita Dominaityte as politician Rolanda Markeviciene; and Karolis Kasperavicius and Arnoldas Augustaitis portraying neo-Nazis Mykolas and Rytis.
The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled exclusive clips from The Activist, offering a glimpse into its gripping narrative and character dynamics. One clip features Juodkazis as Deividas facing a protest led by neo-Nazis, highlighting the film’s exploration of societal conflicts. Another clip showcases a planning meeting among right-wing activists determined to disrupt the LGBTQ+ march, introducing viewers to the tension surrounding Andrius’ undercover efforts.
In a particularly intense scene, Andrius and Bernardas engage in a conversation fraught with danger as they navigate the implications of Andrius’ secret investigation and the potential fallout from a scandal. These clips emphasize the film’s focus on the intersection of personal struggles and broader societal issues.
The film promises to be a thought-provoking exploration of activism, identity, and the challenges faced by marginalized communities in contemporary society. With its compelling storyline and strong performances, The Activist is anticipated to resonate with audiences both in Lithuania and internationally.
