Robbie Ryan Receives Inaugural THR Visionary Award at Camerimage

Irish cinematographer Robbie Ryan will be celebrated with the inaugural THR Visionary in Cinematography Award by The Hollywood Reporter at the EnergaCamerimage film festival in Toruń, Poland. The ceremony is scheduled for November 15, 2025, marking a significant recognition of Ryan’s contributions to the field of cinematography.

Renowned for his versatility, Ryan has received two Academy Award nominations for his exceptional work on Yorgos Lanthimos‘ films, including The Favourite (2018) and Poor Things (2023). His latest collaboration with Lanthimos, titled Bugonia, is set to screen at the festival and is considered a strong contender this awards season.

Ryan’s extensive portfolio features collaborations with acclaimed directors such as Andrea Arnold on American Honey, Fish Tank, and Wuthering Heights, as well as Ken Loach on I, Daniel Blake and Sorry We Missed You. He has also worked with Noah Baumbach on Marriage Story and The Meyerowitz Stories, further showcasing his range and talent.

Camerimage, known for celebrating the art of cinematography, lauded Ryan in a statement, describing him as “an outstanding cinematographer, celebrated for his ability to create evocative, emotionally charged imagery that combines naturalism with striking visual artistry.” The festival highlighted his authenticity, intuitive approach to light, and unique ability to capture human emotions.

Ryan has a history of accolades at Camerimage, having previously won the Audience Award for Best Film and the Golden Frog for C’mon C’mon in 2021. He also received the Bronze Frog for Best Cinematography for Wuthering Heights in 2011 and for Poor Things in 2023. Additionally, he earned the Best Cinematography Award for the music video “Iron Sky” by Paolo Nutini, directed by Daniel Wolfe.

The EnergaCamerimage festival, running through November 22, is recognized as the world’s leading event dedicated to the art and craft of cinematography, making Ryan’s upcoming recognition a highlight of the gathering. His influence and artistry continue to resonate within the film industry, leaving a lasting impact on both audiences and peers alike.
