A five-year-old boy, identified as Hinata Goto, tragically lost his life after becoming caught in a ski travelator at the Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort in Otaru, Japan. The incident occurred on December 28, 2023, while Goto was on vacation with his family. Reports indicate that he fell while attempting to disembark from the travelator, leading to his right arm getting entangled in the machinery.
Despite attempts to rescue him, the boy was declared dead shortly after being transported to the hospital. Local authorities are investigating the incident to ascertain whether there was any negligence related to the installation or maintenance of the travelator.
Details of the Incident
According to Japanese media, Goto was in the process of getting off the travelator when he tripped. His mother activated the emergency stop button, which halted the lift, but not before it had caused significant harm to the young boy. Rescue teams spent approximately 40 minutes dismantling parts of the travelator to free him.
This particular travelator, commonly referred to as a “magic carpet” lift, measures 30 meters (approximately 98 feet) in length and 60 centimeters (around 24 inches) in width. Installed approximately six years ago, it serves as a connection between the resort’s parking lot and the ski slopes, primarily catering to beginners.

Following the tragedy, local officials and resort staff expressed deep condolences. A spokesperson for the Asarigawa Onsen Ski Resort acknowledged the incident and pledged to implement measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Visitors have previously reported concerns about the safety of this specific travelator. A guest quoted by the Asahi Shimbun remarked, “Even as an adult, there are times when I think, ‘It’s a little scary.'” Such statements highlight the need for ongoing evaluations of safety protocols at ski resorts.
