Ukraine has finalized plans to acquire “up to 100” French-made Rafale fighter jets, along with anti-aircraft defense systems and drones, as confirmed by the Elysee Palace. This announcement came during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky‘s visit to Paris on October 16, 2023, where he engaged in discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the details of the deal.
At the Villacoublay Air Force Base, southwest of Paris, the two leaders signed a letter of intent, marking a significant step in military cooperation between France and Ukraine. Although the specifics of the agreement remain confidential, the event highlighted the deepening ties between the two nations. This marks Zelensky’s ninth trip to Paris since the onset of the Russian invasion in 2022, underscoring France’s role as a vital supporter of Ukraine amid fluctuating U.S. military aid.
The signing ceremony took place alongside a Rafale jet equipped with guided AASM bombs, with a SCALP cruise missile also visible, which has already been supplied to Ukraine by France. The display of military hardware included a SAMP/T missile interceptor system and a GF300 radar system, both of which have been sent to bolster Ukraine’s defenses.
The Rafale is a multi-role fighter jet from the French military, comparable to the American F-16. It is designed for a variety of missions, including long-range bombing and air-to-air combat, making it a versatile addition to Ukraine’s air capabilities. Prior to this agreement, France had already supplied Ukraine with Mirage jets, which constitute a significant part of France’s aerial bombing fleet.
This agreement represents a further commitment by France to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, emphasizing the importance of international alliances in the face of evolving global security challenges.
