The Upper Bay Ruritan Club recently recognized the accomplishments of Bohemia Manor High School graduates by awarding scholarships to support their educational journeys at Cecil College. During its annual meeting in October, the club reaffirmed its commitment to youth development by investing in the future leaders of the community.
Over the past twenty years, the Upper Bay Ruritan Club has contributed over $100,000 in scholarships to local students pursuing higher education. Club President Jeremy Rothwell expressed the organization’s dedication to fostering young talent. “As a civic club, we want to invest in the young people within the community,” he stated. “Hopefully they will return after college to do great things in their careers.”
This year’s scholarship recipients are pursuing various degrees, including nursing, elementary education, and general studies. One notable recipient is sophomore Addie Sample, who is preparing to apply for Cecil College’s nursing program in January. Sample revealed, “I had the opportunity to shadow my friend’s mom, an X-ray technician at Christiana Care Hospital, and that’s when I knew I wanted to work in a hospital environment.”
Freshman Kayla Proctor shared her experience with general studies coursework, which sparked her interest in photography while also considering a career in healthcare. “At first, I didn’t think I would like the photography course, but I just love everything about it,” she explained.
Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt commended the Upper Bay Ruritan Club for its long-standing support of students. “The Upper Bay Ruritans have generously supported our college for many years, making a significant impact in the lives of our students,” she noted.
Through partnerships with organizations like the Upper Bay Ruritan Club, the Cecil College Foundation awards over $500,000 in scholarships annually. This financial support is vital for helping local students achieve their academic goals.
Looking ahead, the Upper Bay Ruritan Club has scheduled its annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser for November 1, 2023, at the Hacks Point Fire Company in Earleville. Proceeds from the event will directly benefit future scholarships for local students.
The ongoing efforts of the Upper Bay Ruritan Club exemplify the importance of community investment in education, ensuring that future generations have the resources they need to succeed.
