Briarwood Christian Lions pulled off a breathtaking comeback to defeat top-ranked Pelham Panthers 2-1 in overtime Friday at Ned Bearden Stadium, punching their ticket to the Final Four in Alabama high school soccer.
Trailing 1-0 with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, Andrew Kunard capitalized on a frantic scramble inside the box to tie the game at 1-1 with just 1:02 left. Then, with the rain intensifying during overtime, Quinn Corcoran ignited the Lions’ side and fired a stunning near-post shot from the right flank in the final seconds of the extra period, securing a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over the Panthers.
The match, held on May 1 under heavy rain at Pelham, was a tense back-and-forth battle. Pelham opened the scoring early with a goal from Bakr Al-Sugi in the seventh minute. For much of the game, both teams demonstrated crisp midfield control and skillful defending, but Pelham held a slim lead heading into halftime.
Despite Pelham’s effort to maintain control in the second half and create several scoring chances, Briarwood’s resilient defense, led by critical tackles from Jair Camargo and a string of set-piece threats, kept the Panthers from extending their advantage. As rain soaked the field, the Lions mounted persistent pressure, eventually breaking through thanks to Kunard’s late equalizer.
The overtime period was charged with momentum swings. Pelham nearly retook the lead with multiple chances, but outstanding goalkeeping from Briarwood kept them at bay. With only 30 seconds left in overtime, Briarwood’s goalkeeper Gavin Patterson intercepted a Pelham corner and quickly launched a counterattack. Corcoran’s electric solo run culminated in the winning goal, sending the traveling Briarwood fans into a jubilant frenzy.
This victory marks another thrilling chapter in Briarwood’s 2026 playoff run, following their tense shootout win against Northridge and previous nail-biters with Pelham and Spain Park during the regular season. The Lions have consistently demonstrated grit and determination when tested under pressure.
Looking ahead, Briarwood now advances to face the winner of the Spanish Fort and St. Paul’s Episcopal semifinal match. That contest will take place Thursday, May 7, at John Hunt Park.
“Briarwood’s resilience under pressure has been remarkable all season, today’s comeback epitomizes their spirit,” said Andrew Simonson, Shelby County Reporter Sports Editor.
This stunning upset over the state’s top-ranked team is a major development for Alabama high school soccer fans and highlights the unpredictable drama of playoff soccer. With the season nearing its climax, teams and supporters statewide are bracing for more intense matchups as the race for the 2026 state championship heats up.
