10-Year-Old West Elementary Student Donates Over $10,000 to Military Charity
Waco, Texas — A remarkable moment unfolded at the Chris Kyle Memorial Benefit when 10-year-old Gunner Caldara, a fourth-grader at West Elementary, presented a check for $10,000 to the American Valor Foundation on April 25. The donation came after Caldara spent months raising money by selling items featuring his simple but powerful artwork bearing the message “You are Worth It.”
The event, held at The Base at the Extraco Event Center, marked a milestone—the young fundraiser arrived just $2,100 short of his $10,000 goal but was boosted by generous event donations that pushed the final amount to $10,001. Caldara surprised the Kyle family, founders of the foundation, with the sizable gift while taking pictures alongside them.
From Art Sales to Impactful Support for Veterans
Raised over four years, Caldara’s fundraising journey has amassed nearly $20,000 for the foundation that supports veterans, first responders, and their families—a cause deeply personal to his family, as both parents serve as Waco police officers.
“It was just so awesome being able to give Mr. Kyle and Mrs. Kyle the $10,000 check,” Caldara said at the event. “It’s just awesome I get to do that for such cool people and I’m just grateful I get to do that stuff.”
“I only reached my goal because of y’all’s generosity and being kind hearts,” Caldara told the audience while receiving warm applause.
American Valor Foundation’s Ongoing Mission
The American Valor Foundation was established by the family of the late Navy SEAL Chris Kyle, widely regarded as the deadliest sniper in U.S. history and the inspiration behind the film American Sniper. The foundation provides critical resources and support to veterans and their families, along with first responders, amplifying their mission thanks to donations like Caldara’s.
Since his first contribution of $500 in 2023, Caldara’s yearly donations have steadily increased—reaching $2,000 in 2024, and then a staggering $7,403 just this year before the benefit.
Community Generosity Drives Success
Event donors and supporters played a crucial role in helping Caldara reach and exceed his goal. Their combined generosity underscores the deep respect and recognition for supporting those who serve and sacrifice.
With a youthful passion matched by impressive dedication, Gunner Caldara continues to be a beacon of hope and awareness in the veteran support community. His efforts highlight how even the youngest voices can create massive change.
