At the 2025 Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) Fall Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, Sarah Vicari, MMS, PA-C, the current president of SDPA, discussed her vision for the organization and the importance of mentorship in the field of dermatology. In an interview with the HCPLive team, Vicari, who will serve as president until July 2026, shared insights on the conference’s significance and highlighted key sessions aimed at supporting physician associates (PAs).
Vicari expressed a strong commitment to raising awareness about the Dermatology Physician Assistant Foundation (DPAF), stating, “A lot of people don’t know it exists, and that kind of hurts my heart.” She emphasized the foundation’s crucial role in providing medical missions and community outreach programs. The SDPA supports PAs in conducting their own research, facilitating publication opportunities in the organization’s journal, The Journal of Dermatology for PAs (JDPA).
Launch of RISE Derm PA Mentorship Program
One of the standout initiatives discussed by Vicari is the launch of the RISE Derm PA program, which stands for Reach, Inspire, Support, and Empower. This mentorship program aims to connect PAs with experienced mentors in a structured way. Vicari likened the matching process to that of a dating app, stating, “…It’s basically where PAs can be matched, almost like a Match.com, where you put in your qualities and what you like.” This innovative approach is designed to foster meaningful relationships that enhance professional development.
Vicari also highlighted several educational sessions at the conference, noting her enthusiasm for a presentation by Dr. Gabriela Maloney on off-label use of JAK inhibitors. “I think what I’m most excited about is with Dr. Gabriela Maloney… Have you ever done a lecture on that? Because that would be amazing,” Vicari recalled, reflecting on how the session came together.
The SDPA Fall Conference serves as a platform for PAs to engage with the latest advancements in dermatology, network with peers, and participate in discussions that shape the future of the profession. Through initiatives like the RISE Derm PA program and a focus on community outreach, Vicari aims to strengthen the role of PAs within the dermatology landscape.
