In an effort to promote community engagement and awareness around food and health, The Dallas Morning News will host a panel discussion titled “Food as Medicine: Nourishing Health from the Inside Out” on March 10, 2024. The event will take place at the DEC Network, located in the Shops at RedBird, from 6 p.m., with doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
The panel will be moderated by Emily Brindley, a health reporter for The Dallas Morning News, and will feature prominent health leaders from across North Texas, including representatives from Children’s Health, Parkland Health, Methodist Health System, and UT Southwestern. The discussion will focus on various health pillars that extend beyond traditional medical care, particularly emphasizing the role of nutrition in overall well-being.
Brindley expressed the importance of addressing food-related issues within the community. She noted, “Food can be a fraught topic. Food insecurity, yo-yo dieting, and eating disorders have long plagued our communities.” The panel aims to provide a compassionate space for dialogue, steering clear of judgment regarding personal food choices or lifestyle habits. Instead, the focus will be on understanding and utilizing available resources to improve health and nutrition.
This event is part of a broader initiative by The Dallas Morning News to create a pop-up newsroom at The DEC Network from March 9 to March 12, open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.. The open house format will allow community members to engage with journalists, ask questions, and participate in discussions about health and wellness.
Brindley is eager to explore the challenges and opportunities related to dietary changes, especially in light of the rise of medications like GLP-1s, which can significantly alter appetite and dietary preferences. She aims to provide insights on how individuals can maintain a healthy lifestyle even as these changes occur.
The panel will also include a question-and-answer session, allowing attendees to directly engage with the health leaders and share their thoughts and experiences. Interested participants can RSVP for this free event and are encouraged to arrive with an open mind, ready to learn about achievable ways to enhance personal health.
For those looking to explore more about health and nutrition or to connect with local health leaders, this panel represents a valuable opportunity to gain insights and foster community connections.
