URGENT UPDATE: San Antonio International Airport is experiencing a major holiday travel surge that began on November 22 and is expected to continue until December 1. Officials predict an influx of between 250,000 and 350,000 travelers over this ten-day period, marking one of the busiest travel times of the year.
Ana Flores, a spokeswoman for the airport, emphasized that the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after Thanksgiving will be particularly hectic, with significant crowds expected. “Travelers should plan ahead and arrive at least two hours early,” she stated, advising passengers to stay updated on potential weather-related delays that could impact flights.
In addition to air travel, the American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that nearly 6 million people will journey within Texas for Thanksgiving, reflecting a 1% increase compared to last year and nearly 4% more than the pre-pandemic year of 2019. Over 5 million of these travelers will take to the roads, while approximately 328,000 will fly, marking a 1% increase from last year and a nearly 12% increase since 2019.
Moreover, around 140,000 travelers are expected to use alternative transportation methods, including buses, trains, and boats—an 8% increase from 2024 and a striking 27% increase since 2019.
As families and friends prepare for reunions this holiday season, the impact of this travel rush is felt across the state. With millions on the move, both excitement and anxiety are palpable as travelers navigate their plans.
In this critical time, officials urge travelers to stay informed and be prepared for possible challenges. Those planning to fly should remain connected with their airlines and be ready for any potential delays due to weather conditions affecting other regions.
