Cantare Celebrates USA’s 250th Anniversary with Special Concert

Cantare, an esteemed choral organization based in the East Bay region of California, will commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States’ Declaration of Independence with a concert titled “Until All of Us Are Free.” Scheduled for May 16, 2026, the event will take place at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church in Lafayette, California, showcasing a diverse array of musical genres that span centuries.

The concert will feature performances from Cantare’s Adult Chorale, under the direction of David Morales, who is also the organization’s Founding Artistic Director. Joining them will be the award-winning Aurora Choir, composed of high school singers and directed by Julie Haydon, the Director of Children’s & Youth Choirs. This collaboration highlights Cantare’s commitment to intergenerational music-making.

A Diverse Program Celebrating Freedom

The program for the concert includes works that reflect both historical and contemporary themes of freedom and unity. Notable pieces will include compositions by revolutionary-era artist William Billings as well as Howard Hanson’s choral interpretation of Walt Whitman’s “Song of Democracy.”

In addition to these classical selections, the concert will incorporate popular music. Attendees can look forward to performances of “Keep Marching” from the Broadway show “Suffs,” as well as Garth Brooks’ “We Shall Be Free” and the Black Eyed Peas’ “Where Is the Love.” The program will also celebrate the rich tradition of spirituals, featuring arrangements of classic American songs such as “Lift Every Voice and Sing” and “America the Beautiful.”

The performance will commence at 7:30 p.m., offering a unique opportunity for audiences to reflect on the enduring themes of freedom and equality as the nation marks this significant historical milestone.

Cantare’s concert promises to be a memorable event that not only honors America’s past but also emphasizes the ongoing journey toward justice and unity. This blend of music, history, and community engagement encapsulates the spirit of the organization and its dedication to fostering connections through the art of choral singing.
