The Chicago Bears made significant moves to enhance their offensive line ahead of the 2024 NFL season, introducing three key players: Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson, and Drew Dalman. This strategic overhaul has paid off, as the team now boasts one of the most effective offensive lines in the league.
During a press conference in March, Bears head coach Ben Johnson outlined his vision for the interior offensive line, emphasizing qualities such as toughness, grit, and intelligence. The arrival of Thuney and Jackson, both high-caliber guards, alongside center Dalman, solidified the Bears’ offensive front. Together, they played all 17 games, contributing to a remarkable total of 3,437 snaps out of a possible 3,462. Their efforts helped the Bears achieve the third-best rushing attack in the NFL and provide exemplary protection for quarterback Caleb Williams.
The Bears’ offensive line has been a cornerstone of their success this season. Johnson praised the trio’s impact, stating, “We wouldn’t be where we are offensively right now if it weren’t for them holding down that middle and keeping the pocket clear.” As the Bears prepare for their playoff matchup against the Green Bay Packers, confidence in the offensive line is at an all-time high.
The need for improvement in the offensive line was evident in previous seasons. General manager Ryan Poles, who joined the Bears in 2022, had a clear mandate to revamp the unit. The failures of past signings, such as Nate Davis, indicated a need for a fundamental change. Last season, the Bears struggled with inconsistent lineups, resulting in Williams being sacked 68 times, the highest in the league.
Poles and Johnson recognized the importance of securing top talent. Their familiarity with Thuney from his time in Kansas City and Johnson’s experience with Jackson in Detroit were instrumental in their decisions. This was further supported by thorough scouting of Dalman, who emerged as one of the best centers available.
The Bears’ aggressive acquisitions began with Jackson’s trade on March 4, followed by Thuney’s signing just a day later. Thuney, a seasoned player with three Pro Bowl selections and four Super Bowl rings, brought invaluable experience to the team. Johnson remarked on their character and integrity, emphasizing the importance of their contributions both on and off the field.
When free agency opened, the Bears secured Dalman, solidifying the interior line in a matter of days. Offensive line coach Dan Roushar expressed optimism about the new group, which exceeded expectations in terms of chemistry and performance.

After finishing the season with only 24 sacks, the Bears recorded a sack rate of 4.18 percent, the lowest since 2001.
Williams, reflecting on the season, acknowledged the offensive line’s crucial role. “They’ve been huge for me this year,” he said. “It’s not me cutting it down. Those guys have cut it down for me.”
The Bears’ offensive line has not only excelled in pass protection but also in creating running lanes. In a standout performance against the Philadelphia Eagles, the line helped the team accumulate 281 rushing yards, a feat not achieved since 1984. Running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai became the first Bears duo to rush for over 100 yards each in a game since Walter Payton and Matt Suhey in 1985.
As the playoffs approach, the offensive line’s success has positioned the Bears as a formidable contender. Johnson’s vision of smashmouth football is becoming a reality, anchored by the performance of his new interior linemen. The Bears have sent two offensive linemen to the Pro Bowl, marking the first time since 2006 that the team has achieved this distinction.
