Miami Dolphins Release Offensive Lineman Liam Eichenberg After Five Seasons

The Miami Dolphins announced the release of offensive lineman Liam Eichenberg on Monday, following five seasons with the team. Eichenberg, who was a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, struggled to secure a consistent spot on the offensive line during his tenure in Miami. His release is designated as a result of a failed physical.

Eichenberg, a former standout at Notre Dame, joined the Dolphins after the team traded up to select him. Over the years, he has faced significant challenges, including a leg injury that sidelined him for the entirety of the 2025 season. This injury was previously described by former head coach Mike McDaniel as “chronic.” After spending the past season on the physically unable to perform list, Eichenberg’s one-year contract extension signed in 2024 tolled into 2026 due to his injury status, meaning he was not officially a free agent until his release.

Eichenberg’s role within the Dolphins was marked by versatility; he started at all five positions along the offensive line during his time with the team. He played a total of 60 games, with 52 starts, distributing his time as follows: 14 starts at left tackle, 11 at left guard, eight at center, 17 at right guard, and two at right tackle. Originally drafted as a left tackle, he transitioned to various positions as the coaching staff, including McDaniel, sought to optimize the offensive line.

The Dolphins’ decision to release Eichenberg comes after a season where he expressed uncertainty about his future during the team’s locker cleanout in early January. His release marks a significant moment for the Dolphins as they continue to reshape their roster under new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

In addition to Eichenberg’s release, the Dolphins also announced that they have tendered exclusive-rights free agent cornerback Ethan Bonner. Bonner, who first joined the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2023, will return on a minimum contract to compete for a roster spot. Throughout his career, Bonner has fluctuated between the active roster and the practice squad, appearing in 21 games, with his highlight being his first career interception against the New York Jets last season.

As the Dolphins move forward, the focus will be on bolstering their offensive line and ensuring that they have the right players in place for the upcoming season. Eichenberg’s departure signals a broader strategy aimed at enhancing team performance as the franchise looks to reclaim its competitive edge in the league.
