The Milford area lost a cherished figure on April 26, 2026, with the passing of Mable Smidt, a woman known for her outspoken honesty and warm, generous heart. She was 86 years old and leaves behind a rich legacy of love, kindness, and deep community ties.
Those who knew Mable Smidt remember her as a straightforward, no-nonsense woman who never hesitated to speak her mind. Yet behind her candid nature was a deeply caring individual who consistently put others’ needs before her own. Her easygoing spirit and generosity touched friends, family, and coworkers alike across decades.
Life and Legacy of a Milford Staple
Born October 28, 1939, in Bliss, Nebraska, as Mable Marie Harkins, she was raised with five siblings in a close-knit family. Her early years in Nebraska shaped a lifelong love for family gatherings, travel, and hospitality. After graduating from Bartlett High School, she married her first husband, Bernard Lee Fulkerth, in 1959 and raised five children.
Mable’s work ethic was notable, having worked for 30 years at well-known local employers including the Bil-Mar turkey factory, Jo & By’s Pub, and the Taco House. Her friendly presence became a fixture in the community, making her a familiar and beloved face.
Later in life, she remarried Darryl “Cowboy” Smidt, with whom she shared a deep, passionate bond. Even after his passing, she frequently spoke of him, carrying his memory close to her heart.
Family and Farewell Plans
Mable Smidt is survived by her five children—Bernie (Deb) Fulkerth of Hartley; Daniel (Natascha) Fulkerth of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Randy (Connie) Fulkerth of Alta; Dean Fulkerth of Milford; and Tammy Naab of Milford—as well as two stepchildren, Brenda (Gene) Nattress and Mike Smidt. Her large extended family also includes nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, all of whom carry forward her stories and values.
The family announced a joint celebration of life to honor both Mable and Darryl, scheduled for May 9, 2026, at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Milford. Visitation will take place from 1–3 p.m., followed by a service at 3 p.m., inviting the community to pay respects and celebrate their lives.
