Donations Surge to Over $2.5 Million for Bondi Beach Hero

A crowdfunding campaign for Bondi Beach hero Ahmed Al Ahmed has raised over $2.5 million following his courageous actions during a recent mass shooting. Al Ahmed intervened, wresting a firearm from one of the attackers. His bravery has inspired nearly 43,000 individual donations, including a significant contribution of $99,999 from American billionaire Bill Ackman.

The GoFundMe page highlights Al Ahmed’s selflessness during a chaotic moment when he risked his own life to protect others. He was reportedly shot twice in the process of disarming the gunman and remains hospitalized. The page emphasizes the community’s gratitude, stating, “His actions were selfless, instinctive, and undeniably heroic.”

Donations for victims of the Bondi shooting have collectively reached nearly $5 million. This includes approximately $780,000 raised for the family of Matilda, the youngest victim, who was just ten years old. Matilda’s funeral service took place in Woollahra on December 7, 2023. Additionally, $650,000 has been raised for the families of Sofia, 61, and Boris Gurman, 69, who were killed while attempting to thwart the attack.

The tragedy unfolded on December 3, 2023, when alleged terrorists Sajid Akram, 50, and his son Naveed Akram, 24, opened fire on crowds gathered at Bondi Beach to celebrate the first day of Hanukkah. Al Ahmed, a 42-year-old Syrian refugee and owner of a tobacco shop in Sutherland, has been hailed as a national hero for his actions.

Both New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have visited Al Ahmed in hospital, commending his bravery. Minns described him as a “real-life hero,” while Albanese called his actions a source of inspiration for all Australians. “He decided to take action, and his bravery is an inspiration for all Australians,” Albanese stated.

Al Ahmed may receive a bravery award from Governor-General Sam Mostyn, who noted the recognition he deserves for his actions. “It would be staggering that he wouldn’t be receiving some form of bravery award,” Mostyn commented, adding that she has already spoken with King Charles, who expressed gratitude for Al Ahmed’s heroics.

Despite his injuries, Al Ahmed has expressed appreciation for the support he has received. Speaking from his hospital bed, he conveyed a heartfelt message in Arabic, thanking those who have contributed to his recovery. “May Allah reward you and grant wellbeing,” he said, emphasizing his humble nature and the deep impact of the community’s support.

Al Ahmed’s migration lawyer, Sam Issa, revealed that Al Ahmed suffered multiple bullet wounds, with one injury potentially threatening his arm. “He’s not well at all. He’s riddled with bullets,” Issa stated. Yet, the hero remains resolute, stating he does not regret his actions on that tragic day.

As the community continues to rally around Al Ahmed and the victims of the attack, the outpouring of support underscores the resilience of those affected by violence and the collective effort to honor those who act with extraordinary courage in the face of danger.
